It was every man for himself this weekend at the Varcoe Household as Ma headed to Kansas City for a fun weekend of shopping with the girls! The boys weekend got off to a bit of a rocky start as Mom departed through the front door and Evan watched her drive away, alligator tears in full force. I quickly attempted to come to the rescue w/ all of my resources at hand, Lucky Charms, milk in a Dora cup, the eagle sitting on the nest, but nothing was working. After about ten minutes, we stumbled to our chair and had a quick breakfast before we hit the road for Cedar Rapids.
Evan was very good on the drive and we made a pit stop at the Rice household to shoot some hoops w/ Colin and Josh. Around noon, Evan's tummy was starting to rumble so we headed to Gma & Gpa's house where Gma had lunch waiting for us. Evan took a quick nap and then it was outside to enjoy the 80 degree weather.
Grandma brought Evan's new motorized Handy Manny car out to the front yard and Evan drove up and down the sidewalk waving at all the other kids and checked out every puppy along the way. Then it was time for the boys to play outside and we took turns kicking the kickball and throwing the hardball around. It took all of ten tosses before Evan decided he needed to wear the glove, quickly putting an end to our game of catch.

After playing outside, it was time to head to Iowa City for a wedding reception and a Keating family gathering. The wedding reception was for a family friend of ours and was held in the press box at Kinnick Stadium. The venue was very cool....not that Evan could have cared exactly where we were as they had did have about four rows of seats that he was able to run around over and over and over.
After running for about two hours, only stopping so the grandparents could feed him a fine dinner of BBQ meatballs, hot dogs, cake icing and ice cream, it was off to Keating's.
As usual, Evan was very entertained by his many cousins playing outside and chasing after footballs and basketballs. Evan was also entertained by his many aunts and uncles feeding him sugar and chocolate when Dad wasn't looking. I'm sure that played a role in Evan staying up two hours later than usual and being a bear at bedtime!
Aunt Lindsay was the first to greet Evan Sunday morning & he quickly asked where Uncle Ben was! Not really but he sure does like his Uncle Ben! We all ate breakfast and then it was back outside to enjoy the beautiful weather. We found a wiffel ball and bat this time and Evan loved having everyone throw to him. We won't mention the meltdowns that occur after the RARE swing and miss... :)
Usually Evan won't sleep in the car if Dora is playing. Clearly he was a tired boy as he took an hour snooze on our ride back home. When we got home, we took a walk, played outside for a while and ate lunch before we heard a car door in our driveway.
Evan was very excited to see his MaMa again to the point where he was waving bye-bye at Amy's friends after they had been in the driveway for about 60 seconds. We spent the rest of the afternoon enjoying the beautiful weather...until Evan bounced his forehead off the driveway chasing after a ball. He did bounce back quickly from what I'm sure will be the first of many bumps and bruises this summer. All in all, Evan survived the weekend which is the definition of success in a boys weekend at home!
Whew...
